Live Betting Workflow

A systematic approach to live prop betting

The Live Betting Workflow

Success in live betting requires a systematic approach. Here's a step-by-step process that covers preparation, execution, and review.

Phase 1: Pre-Game Preparation (30 Minutes Before Tip-Off)

Step 1: Identify Target Games

Warning

Focus on 2-3 games max. You can't watch 10 games at once and maintain the depth of analysis needed for profitable live betting.

Selection criteria:

  • Games where you have strong pre-game reads
  • Games with clear blowout potential (large spread)
  • Games featuring coaches whose tendencies you've tracked
  • Games with injury situations that could create opportunities

Step 2: Research Coaching Tendencies

Before the game starts, review:

FactorWhat to Check
Blowout thresholdAt what lead does this coach pull starters?
Star minutesHow many minutes do stars play in blowouts?
Substitution patternsAny predictable rotation timing?
Matchup historyAny tendencies against this specific opponent?

Step 3: Set Alerts

Configure notifications for:

  • Injury news - Any player leaving the game
  • Foul trouble - Star players picking up 3rd or 4th fouls
  • Score thresholds - Alert when any team goes up by 15+
  • Line movements - Significant moves on your target props

Pre-Game Checklist

□ Selected 2-3 target games
□ Reviewed coaching tendencies for all teams
□ Noted pre-game lines for key props
□ Set up alerts for injuries, fouls, score thresholds
□ Have multiple screens ready (TV, laptop, phone)
□ Sportsbook apps logged in and funded
□ Spreadsheet open for tracking

Phase 2: During the Game (Live Betting Window)

Step 1: Watch the Game, Not the Lines

Key Insight

Your edge comes from seeing what's happening on the court/field, not from staring at odds. The algorithm watches the stats. You watch the context.

What to observe:

  • Pace changes (speeding up or slowing down?)
  • Foul trouble developing
  • Injuries or players favoring limbs
  • Substitution patterns
  • Defensive adjustments
  • Body language and effort level

Step 2: Wait for Stoppages

Ed Miller's rule: Only bet during timeouts or breaks in play.

This minimizes broadcast delay risk and gives you time to:

  • Calculate your projection
  • Compare to the live line
  • Execute the bet without rushing

Best times to bet:

  • Timeouts
  • Quarter/period breaks
  • Halftime
  • Injury timeouts
  • Review stoppages

Step 3: Calculate Quickly

Run this mental calculation:

1. Current stat: Player has X points/yards/etc.
2. Time remaining: Y minutes left in game
3. Projected pace: Based on game script, how many more opportunities?
4. Expected additional production: Z more points/yards/etc.
5. Total projection: X + Z = Your number
6. Compare to live line: Is your number 10%+ different?

Step 4: Bet Fast, But Not Recklessly

Tip

If you have an edge, bet it before the line moves. But don't chase every line movement. Quality over quantity.

Decision framework:

Your EdgeAction
10%+ difference from lineBet immediately
5-10% differenceConsider betting, watch for confirmation
Less than 5% differencePass, not enough edge
Line moving toward youBet now before it moves further
Line moving awayReassess, may have missed the window

In-Game Checklist

□ Watching the game (not just the lines)
□ Noting pace, foul trouble, substitutions
□ Waiting for stoppages to bet
□ Calculating projections quickly
□ Only betting when edge is 10%+
□ Tracking all bets in real-time

Phase 3: Post-Game Review (10 Minutes After Game Ends)

Step 1: Track Results

Record for each live bet:

FieldExample
PropTatum Over 24.5 points
Your line-110
Closing line-135
ResultWin (29 points)
CLV+2.5%
NotesMazzulla kept him in vs. Lakers

Step 2: Calculate Closing Line Value (CLV)

Key Insight

CLV is your report card. If you're consistently beating the closing line, you're making good bets regardless of short-term results.

CLV Formula:

CLV = Closing Implied Probability - Your Implied Probability

Example:

  • You bet at -110 (52.38% implied)
  • Line closed at -135 (57.45% implied)
  • CLV = 57.45% - 52.38% = +5.07%
Use the Vig Calculator to convert odds to implied probability

Step 3: Adjust Your Models

After each session, ask:

QuestionIf YesIf No
Did my game script read play out?Reinforce the patternInvestigate why it didn't
Did the coach follow their usual pattern?Update confidence levelNote the exception
Was my projection accurate?Trust the processIdentify the miss
Did I bet at the right time?Maintain timingAdjust entry points

Post-Game Checklist

□ Recorded all live bets with details
□ Calculated CLV for each bet
□ Noted whether game script played out as expected
□ Updated coaching tendency database
□ Identified any new patterns
□ Reviewed timing of bets (too early? too late?)
□ Calculated session P/L

Session Summary:

  • Bets: 3
  • Record: 2-1
  • Average CLV: +4.0%
  • Notes: Coaching tendency research paid off

Tip

Even the losing bet had positive CLV (+4.8%). This is what matters long-term. You made a good bet that happened to lose. Trust the process.

📝 Exercise

Instructions

You're preparing for a live betting session. The Lakers are playing the Warriors tonight. The spread is Lakers -7.5.

Pre-game research reveals:

  • Darvin Ham (Lakers coach) pulls starters at 18+ point leads
  • Steve Kerr (Warriors coach) pulls starters at 15+ point leads
  • LeBron James averages 32 minutes in blowout wins
  • Stephen Curry averages 26 minutes in blowout losses

Question: If the Lakers go up 20 points midway through the 3rd quarter, what live betting opportunities should you be looking for?
