Team Props

Team totals, first half lines, and team-level propositions

Team Props

Team props focus on team-level statistics rather than individual player performance. These include team totals, team rushing yards, team three-pointers made, and similar aggregated outcomes.

Key Insight

Team props sit between main markets (spreads and totals) and player props in terms of efficiency. They're more stable than player props but often overlooked by sharp bettors focused on game lines.

How Team Props Differ From Player Props

CharacteristicPlayer PropsTeam Props
VarianceHigher (individual performance swings)Lower (aggregated across multiple players)
Sample SizeSingle player's opportunitiesTeam's collective opportunities
EfficiencyLess efficient (more to track)More efficient (closer to main markets)

Team Totals

Team totals are derived from the game total and spread. They're one of the most liquid team props.

How Team Totals Are Set:

Team Total = (Game Total + Spread) ÷ 2

For example:

  • Game Total: 47.5
  • Spread: Chiefs -6.5
  • Chiefs Team Total: (47.5 + 6.5) ÷ 2 = 27 points
  • Opponent Team Total: (47.5 - 6.5) ÷ 2 = 20.5 points

Tip

Because team totals are mathematically linked to the spread and total, you can sometimes find arbitrage or correlation opportunities when one market moves but the other hasn't adjusted yet.

Key Drivers for NFL Team Props

Team Total:

  • Spread (indicates expected dominance)
  • Pace of play
  • Red zone efficiency
  • Opponent scoring defense

Team Rushing Yards:

  • Game script expectation
  • Offensive line quality
  • Opponent rush defense DVOA
  • Weather conditions (rain/cold favors rushing)

Team Passing Yards:

  • Game script (trailing teams pass more)
  • Wind and weather
  • Opponent pass defense
  • Pace of play

Key Drivers for NBA Team Props

Team Total:

  • Pace (possessions per game)
  • Offensive rating
  • Opponent defensive rating
  • Rest and travel schedule

Team 3-Pointers:

  • Three-point attempt rate
  • Team 3P%
  • Opponent 3P% allowed
  • Pace (more possessions = more attempts)

Warning

NBA team totals are derived from game totals and spreads, making them highly efficient. Your edge here usually comes from spotting discrepancies in how the market prices pace or defensive matchups rather than finding outright mispriced lines.

Key Drivers for NHL Team Props

Team Total Goals:

  • Goaltender save percentage
  • Expected goals (xG) differential
  • Power play opportunities
  • 5v5 scoring rates

Team Shots:

  • Shots per game average
  • Opponent shots allowed
  • Pace of play
  • Special teams time

Key Insight

NHL team shot props are often softer than goal props because they're less popular with recreational bettors. Shots have lower variance than goals, making them more modelable.

When to Bet Team Props vs. Player Props

Choose Team Props when:

  • You have a strong read on game script or pace
  • You want lower variance than individual player props
  • You've identified a discrepancy between team total and spread/total
  • Weather or conditions affect team-wide performance

Choose Player Props when:

  • You have specific information about a player's role or matchup
  • The market hasn't adjusted for injury news or lineup changes
  • You can identify a clear driver for that individual's performance

Tip

Many sharp bettors use team props as a "hedge" against individual variance. If you're confident in a team's offensive performance but unsure which player will produce, the team total removes that uncertainty.

Instructions

Test your understanding of team props and when to use them.

The game total is 52 and the spread is Packers -7. What is the implied Packers team total?

Which scenario represents the BEST opportunity for a team rushing yards prop?

Why might NHL team shot props be 'softer' than team goal props?
